Decoding shoe sizes: My research begins!

Decoding shoe sizes: My research begins!

In my last post, I talked about the importance of measuring your feet. Now, I'm diving into the world of shoe sizes. What are all the numbers!

The challenge:

Understanding the shoe size systems is a bit like learning a new language. There are numbers, half sizes, different width fittings and terminology to understand...it can be overwhelming. To make things even trickier, there are four main sizing systems—UK, US, EU, and Mondopoint—plus regional variations around the world.

What I've learned so far:

The Basics: The UK system uses a numerical scale, starting at size 0. Each increment is one-third of an inch or 8.47mm.

Children's vs. Adult Sizes: Whilst children sizes start from a size 0 and go up to a size 13.5. Adult sizing starts from a size 1.

Brand Variation: Sizes can vary significantly between brands. A size 6 in one brand might fit completely differently than a size 6 in another. Differences in design, moulds, and manufacturing all impact fit.

What I'm working on:

·      How do we convert sizes between UK, EU, and US?

·      What’s the best way to find the right size for growing feet?

·      How do I explain Width, Arch, and Instep Height fittings clearly?

·      How do we determine if someone needs a narrow, standard, wide, or extra-wide fit?

·      What impact do materials have on fit and comfort?

·      Why is the right shoe fit from an early age essential for healthy development?

Next Steps:

I’ll be looking into width fittings, materials, and conversion guides to help simplify shoe shopping! I’m also working with an award-winning business to bring you a phone-based measuring app that you can use from the comfort of your home.

Conclusion:

Thank you for following along! I'm committed to making shoe sizing less confusing. I value your feedback and questions. Subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive news and updates.

With Love.
